I'll admit it! I used to be one of those... a banker! Yes, I worked in the banking industry for many years, as well as in the corporate business and marketing environment for nearly a decade. Despite what you might think, I really had a dream job: a company I enjoyed working for, coworkers I enjoyed working with and a salary and benefits I enjoyed. Despite all this, I didn't enjoy my work. I felt like I was just coasting by, just going through the motions.
I mean, I used to sing and perform in musical theater performances since I was a little girl. The arts are my true passion. Why on earth would I decide to study business and finance and work in banking? Was I crazy? No! I realize now that I was taking the "safe" route. Many of us go through a similar path at some point in our lives...a path that deep down we know is not right for us. Are you traveling down that path?
It was around the time that I started feeling physically sick and agonizing about going to work that I became "divinely inspired" by a higher power. It dawned on me that my purpose and mission in life involved philanthropy in some way, as well as my passion in the arts. I had reached the point of no return and I knew that I needed to leave my "safe" job. It was terrifying for me, but it had to be done. Fulfilling my Purpose--or my Masterpiece Purpose as I call it--was more important than anything else.
When I finally left my cushy corporate job to start my own business in the arts, I believed that it would be an easy transition. Why not? I used to advise wealthy entrepreneurs and professionals and was able to analyze their financial statements and business plans better than they could. Well, reality hit and it didn't take long to realize that I was wrong! After nearly a year of dwindling savings and practically no sales, I found myself feeling desperate! This is the first time I have ever known what it felt like to be a "struggling artist."
So in a matter of a year I went from working in a profitable, but unfulfilling career, to a fulfilling, but unprofitable business. How could this be? There had to be a balance to living a life of passion and purpose and earning income! Or was I destined to live in one extreme or another?
I made a lot of mistakes. I felt like quitting, and many times I almost did! There were even moments of panic and stage fright, as I had developed a severe fear of public speaking. Instead of letting these mistakes and fears cripple me, I learned from them and flipped them into opportunities to grow and improve myself. I knew I had to set myself back on course toward success.
Luckily for me, I continued on with the faith that I must fulfill my purpose no matter what! Along the journey to my Masterpiece Life, I discovered things about myself I never knew.
